Established in 1975, the Municipality of Slovenj Gradec annually bestows the Berneker Award in honour of sculptor Fran Berneker (1874–1932) and the Berneker Honourable Mentions on creators engaged in the field of arts and culture, mostly an important protagonists of the local amateur cultural activities. The very first prize went to painter Karel Pečko, in 2009 the award was bestowed to (inter)nationally known photographer Tomo Jeseničnik. In 2013 the music group JAZOO got the prize.
